Frequently Asked Questions

Who can do Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types and colours except those with active breakout and men with heavy facial hair. If you have active acne, it is necessary to wait until breakouts are healed before trying this treatment. This is a great treatment if you are pregnant or nursing and want exfoliation without the use of chemicals.

Who shouldn't do Dermaplaning?

- Active acne (grade 3 or 4) - Blood thinners - Tendency towards keloid scarring - Recent treatments, including: laser, chemical peels, plastic surgery, microdermabrasion (on average 2-3 weeks post treatment, discuss with your esthetician) - Certain medications that thin the skin (i.e. Retin A and Accutane) - Allergic to nickel - Patients with active cold sores or warts, wounded, sunburned, excessively sensitive skin, healing problems, dermatitis or inflammatory Rosacea in the area(s) to be treated should be excluded from the DermaPlane procedure because it could potentially precipitate a flare up or spread the condition - Patients with a history of allergies, rashes or other skin reactions may be sensitive to treatment - Dermaplane is not recommended if you have taken Accutane within the past year or received chemotherapy or radiation therapy

Will my hair grow back thicker and darker?

No, dermaplaning will not alter your natural hair growth. Hair growing back thicker after shaving is one of the oldest beauty myths there is. While it may appear that way, the prickly unwanted guests are just growing back blunt-ended. This gives them a coarse texture, but rest assured, they aren't actually any thicker or darker than they were originally. In the same way, shaving your face will not stimulate more hair growth so you have nothing to fear from the treatment and the growth cycle of your hair will remain the same regardless.

What is the recommended time frame for Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning removes 21 days worth of dead skin cells, so it’s best to allow the skin to complete its rejuvenation cycle before your next treatment. Treatment recommended to be done every 4 to 6 weeks

Can you treat clients with active acne/breakouts?

While dermaplaning can help reduce the appearance of acne scars, it is not advised for those with active acne and/or frequent breakouts. The procedure can end up leading to over activity in sebaceous glands in these patients, leading to excess oil, and as a result, breakouts. Those with very sensitive skin conditions (such as rosacea) should also consult an esthetician before treatment to ensure dermaplaning is safe.

How is Dermaplaning different to a peel?

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation process that does not use acids or enzymes to remove dead skin cells. All of the exfoliation is achieved during your treatment and you will not peel or visibly shed skin after your service, while Peels can result in dramatic peeling in the days following a service. Dermaplaning provides a good alternative to peels for those who desire professional grade exfoliation without the potential social downtime.

What should I expect to feel during the treatment?

Dermaplaning is a painless treatment that includes deep cleansing, professional exfoliation in the form of dermaplaning followed by skin care suited to your unique skin. Dermaplaning has a similar sensation to close a shave which removes vellus hair and dead skin cells simultaneously.

What should I expect after Dermaplaning?

You’ll immediately look more radiant with a more even skin tone and texture. While the main objective of this treatment is exfoliation, the immediate removal of peach fuzz is an added benefit which renders the skin exceptionally smooth and soft. Skin care products are better able to penetrate the skin following a dermaplaning service which allows them to work more efficiently. Your cosmetics will also go on smoother. After the treatment, your skin will be highly sensitive to sun exposure and may look pink, so be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation.

Can you combine other treatments in the same Dermaplane session?

Yes. You can do the following treatments in combination with a dermaplane session:
- Contouring Mask
- Esthemax HydroJelly Mask - LED Light Therapy - Extractions - Radio Frequency Therapy - Skin Needling

You can also do facial peels following dermaplaning, as we remove the initial layer of skin, so a peel can penetrate far deeper into the dermis, making for a more effective treatment. We offer Depigmentation peel and Enzyme Peels.
