Fibroblast Skin and Beauty

Skin Needling, also known as Micro Needling or Collagen Induction Therapy (C.I.T) is an automated-micro needling therapy system that vertically pierces the skin to naturally stimulate collagen and elastin with minimal epidermal damage. This enhances rejuvenation results and is far safer for the client because there is much less epidermal damage. The automatic, high speed vibrating function of the device increases the effectiveness of the treatment by rapidly creating quick multiple insertions which dramatically reduce pain and discomfort for the patient. A great treatment for all skin types.

The treatment introduces fine needles to the skin to create microscopic channels. In doing so the dermis is encouraged to produce new collagen and elastin which generates new skin cells. The skin then becomes thicker, plumper and more youthful. The device that is covered with many ultra-fine needles is run across the targeted areas to create small channels in the skin. As the device rolls along the skin, these needles penetrate the upper layers of skin producing thousands of tiny puncture marks or micro-medical needle- channels in the skin.

These microscopic wounds, which heal within a few hours, stimulate the skin’s healing process and increase collagen and elastin production. Skin Needling is gentle enough to stimulate collagen production without producing scar tissue or increasing pigmentation.

The epidermis is affected by this process as evinced by redness and superficial bleeding. The presence of bleeding and inflammation then prompts the body’s natural healing process. During the healing process, growth factors, connective tissue proteins, and other chemicals involved in faster healing are produced at an efficient rate. Collagen, elastin, fibroblasts, and other growth factors then replace the injuries which will then be the foundation of new skin. Based on studies, four sessions of microneedling increase collagen and elastin production by up to 400% within a 6-month treatment period.

  1. Stimulates Epidermal growth factor (EGF) which is a protein that stimulates cell growth

  2. Increases the density of the epidermis (first layer of the skin)

  3. Strengthens collagen in vessel walls and connective tissues

  4. Increases availability of cell nutrients

  5. Increase platelet growth factors attracting monocytes releasing interleukin 10 (anti-inflammatory cytokine)

  • Do not have Skin Needling performed if you have used Accutane (Isotretinoin), an acne medication, in the last six months. During Accutane therapy and up to 6 months after completing isotretinoin, the skin is highly sensitive and changes of scarring are high; therefore, we recommend clients to wait at least 6 months after completing therapy

  • Use Serums: Serum can moisturise the skin and help hydrate and retain the water levels in the skin post-treatment. Combine with a repair cream for intense moisture.

  • Use a gentle cleanser: In place of active products, a very mild cleanser and barrier cream is recommended to keep your skin clean and soothe any resultant dry skin and flakiness.

  • Use collagen stimulating peptides: Collagen stimulating peptides will help your skin to prepare and recover from the procedure. These peptides work by aiding in the stimulation of collagen production and intensify the effects of the skin needling treatment.

  • Apply a cooling face mask: You may experience some skin irritation following skin needling, therefore we recommend the use of a cooling face mask to reduce inflammation and redness and to make your skin feel more comfortable.

  • Drink plenty of water: Drink plenty of water both before and after the procedure. Keeping well hydrated will assist in faster healing and skin rejuvenation.

  • Once the skin has healed, use sunscreen: While it’s important to give the sunscreen a miss for the first few days following the procedure, we do advise that you use a broad-spectrum sunscreen once your skin has healed, to prevent unwanted pigmentation and sun damage.

Frequently asked questions

Can I treat any area on my face and body?

Yes, all areas of the face and body can be treated. Scarring and stretch marks can be treated too.

What is the difference between Skin Needling Automated Device and Dermal Rollers?

Traditional Dermal Rollers puncture the skin in slanted angles. The rolling action of the device causes the needles to enter and leave at an angle, resulting in a painful experience and lateral epidermal tears. The mechanics of the needle, and angled application of the needles, create a much more painful treatment with longer recovery time. In contrast, the automated device has a much smaller needle tip that vibrates and oscillates, enabling precision in hard to reach places (for instance the nose, eyes and mouth), as well as puncturing the skin at a 90 degree angle, eliminating the pain and epidermal tearing that occurs with Dermal Rollers. Additionally, unlike traditional Dermal Rollers, the device allows for adjustable puncture depth to tailor the treatment to an individuals needs.

How long to see results?

All skin is different so we cannot give a definite time frame for results, but as you do the treatments your skin will feel lighter, tighter and brighter almost immediately. If you are treating scars or wrinkles you will see results each week as the skin changes and collagen re-grows, then after 1-3 months deeper results.

Do the little holes/channels in the skin stay open and will it absorb dirt?

No, the tiny channels quickly close over, within the hour.

What product do you use while doing the treatment?

We apply 100% Hyaluronic Acid serum on the treatment area. The product penetrates into the skin while Skin Needling and helps glide the device over the treated area. This product also allows for better and hydrated results. HYALURONIC ACID BENEFITS: Smooths fine lines and wrinkles Hydrates Repairs the barrier of our skin Plumps and softens skin Increases elasticity Heals damaged tissue Protects from UV rays Antioxidant Defense Water retention properties Anti-inflammatory properties

Can I do the treatment if I am breastfeeding or pregnant?

The reason we say a pregnant or lactation woman cannot do the treatment is because when pregnant or lactating is that the body needs all of its vitamins to feed the baby. So, as the production of new collagen uses some vitamins, it is best not to needle at this time.

Do you have to use a cream or product with Skin Needling? What products should I use?

After needling use a good quality product (cream or oil) with active (vitamins) ingredients, as after needling the skin will absorb 84% of that product- compared to 4% without skin needling. The needling facilitates tiny channels/holes for it to literally go into the skin painlessly. Needling stimulates blood flow and collagen re-growth. Skin care products used after needling are extremely beneficial. You can use Vitamin A and C, copper peptides or a high quality, vitamin enriched active ingredient moisturiser.

Can I do Skin Needling if have or am prone to cold sores?

If you have any type of herpes virus dormant or otherwise you cannot use the Skin Needling device in that area. When treating above lip lines, if you have suffered from herpes complex (cold sores) in the past, make sure the therapist does not touch the lips or the cold sores may flare again.

Can I do Skin Needling if I have active acne?

We can treat acne on the skin,. However, if it is active, skin needling should be avoided during outbreaks.

What is the down time like?

The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkish that may last for 12 to 48 hours. In order to reduce visible redness, we recommend hyaluronic acid after the procedure, and to protect the skin with zinc based sunblock. The use of mineral makeup may be used after procedure.

Can Skin Needling be performed for all skin types and colours?

Absolutely. It’s safe and effective for all types and colors of skin. There is no risk of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation.

Can Skin Needling help in treating hyperpigmentation?

Yes, Skin Needling provides you with a new layer of skin which is free from any kind of spots or marks. Dark spots of both the epidermis and the dermis layers of the skin can be reduced with the help of Skin Needling. The Skin Needling procedure requires 4 to 6 sessions with a gap of 4 to 8 weeks between each session. The skin starts responding after the first session itself and at the end of the whole procedure, you get rejuvenated, firm and spot-free skin.

Does Skin Needling help with aging skin?

Skin Needling has the added benefit of tightening up loose skin. As we age, our bodies produce less collagen which causes skin to sag and become less firm. As Skin Needling penetrates the skin with the micro punctures it triggers the body’s natural healing process, generating new collagen and elastin cells. The result is tighter, firmer, softer, healthier and younger looking skin.

How does Skin Needling help reduce the size of pores?

One of the most sought after benefits of regular Skin Needling is its ability to make your pores appear smaller. As Skin Needling goes to work stimulating the collagen in and around your pores it causes them to plump up, reducing the visible size of your pores.

What can I expect post-treatment?

Skin Needling stimulates your body to produce natural collagen and elastin, which continues for up to 12 weeks after your treatment. Individual results vary, with some patients noticing a discernible difference within a few weeks and others needing several treatments. However, your results will continue to improve months after your initial treatment and will last until your skin goes through its natural ageing process. Burn scars are slow to respond. All after effects last a couple of days, however depending on the depth of penetration of the needles they can last longer. Redness, sensitivity and slight swelling: Following your treatment, you can expect some redness and slight swelling around the areas that have been treated. Redness should reduce within 24 hours, but may last up to 72 hours. Warm heated skin/sunburn sensation: Your skin may feel warm to touch immediately after your procedure. Your skin may feel warm to touch, like a mild sunburn sensation. This should last no longer than a day or two. Dry and flaky skin: 3-5 after your skin may become a little dry and flaky. The skin may look and feel like sandpaper; these effects generally last 2-7 days as the treated skin flakes off and is replaced by new tissue. This is a completely normal process due to the dead skin cells being stimulated upwards. Avoid picking the skin and apply moisturiser 2-3 times per day. Once this process is finished your skin will feel softer and look radiant, as though you have had a great exfoliation. Tightness: You will feel a mild tightness on the treated area. This will subside over the next few days. Itching and discomfort: There may be itching of the skin. Avoid scratching the skin. Bruising and scratching/scabbing: You may notice slight scratching or needle bruising. This will reduce over the next 24 – 48 hours. Red, purple or brown dots: The appearance of petechiae or small blood blisters is common and perfectly normal around areas of thinner skin such as the forehead, nose and eye area. These usually disappear within 3-4 days. Petechiae are formed when tiny blood vessel called capillaries break open. When these blood vessels break, blood leaks into your skin. Other effects: Darkening of the treated area.
